New education building for Wageningen University & Research
As student numbers rise, a new education building will be constructed: Aurora. The building has five floors for education and research, a technical floor on the roof and a bicycle cellar. With the new building, the WUR should be able to serve around 15,500 students by 2021. LIAG Architects won the tender, not only because the architectural firm was able to realise a flexible design, but also because they respond to the identity of the university. An educational institution that focuses on: ‘Exploring the potential of nature to improve the quality of life.’
A special aspect is the sloping façade elements. The elements, made of high-strength concrete, have relief with an abstract plant motif that gives the building a unique appearance. The concrete elements continue into the interior atrium. In this way, the important connection between inside and outside is emphasised even more. In addition, they provide shade on the façade, which limits the heat load in the building.
